Technology

Researchers at Goethe University Frankfurt have identified HES (Heat Exserted Stigma), a heat stress-induced gene that regulates style length in tomato flowers and thereby influences stigma position, fruit set and yield under elevated temperatures. The technology opens a new route to improve thermotolerance and reproductive stability in modern tomato cultivars.

Using genetic analysis and tomato lines with altered HES activity, the team showed that loss of HES function results in exserted stigma, reduced fruit and seed set, and significantly lower yield under heat stress. In contrast, HES overexpression promotes inserted stigma and leads to improved fruit yield and seed production under both standard and heat stress conditions, without relevant trade-offs for the plant.

Applications

-This technology is of particular interest to partners in vegetable breeding, seed technology and climate-resilient crop development.

-It offers a differentiated molecular entry point for improving tomato performance under heat stress and could support the development of next-generation cultivars for increasingly challenging growing environments.

Technology stage

-Functional validation completed in tomato lines.

-CRISPR/Cas9 knockout and transgenic overexpression lines established in cv. Moneymaker.

-Heat stress assays performed under controlled greenhouse and growth chamber conditions.

-Next development step: generation of gain-of-function CRISPR lines to enhance HES activity under elevated temperatures.

-Priority EP patent application no. 25166407.4 “Modified Tomato Plants” was filed in March 2025 and is currently pending.
