Technology

The optogenetic voltage clamp (OVC) is a novel all-optical platform developed at Goethe University Frankfurt for controlled voltage-clamp experiments in various cell types.

It combines a genetically encoded voltage indicator with optogenetic tools for de- and hyperpolarization in a computerized closed-loop feedback system, enabling precise control of membrane potential without conventional electrode-based patch-clamp electrophysiology.

Applications

-OVC is designed for high-throughput screening of drugs and ion channels, with the potential to simplify the analysis of millions of compounds for specific ion-channel interactions.

-Its contactless optical workflow can be integrated into plate-reader-based setups, including 384-well formats, and also supports mutagenesis screening by helping identify relevant ion-channel variants for subsequent isolation and sequencing.

Technology stage

-The technology has already produced very successful first experiments and data sets, and further development is ongoing.
